This is the first time Garis Art Exhibition holds an exhibition outside Bali, specifically outside Hotel Padma, Bali. The number of visitors going to Bali has declined significantly due to the Bali Bombing. Art lovers outside Bali are reluctant to go to Bali just for attending a painting exhibition. It would be a great disadvantage for the painters if this exhibition of high quality works proceeds without notice to the art loving community in Indonesia. Therefore, it is a wise decision to have this exhibition in Jakarta where the majority of the art-lovers reside.

The three painters, Paul Husner, Mario Blanco and Pupuk Daru Purnomo have a similar approach to the process of painting, by using objects. Paul Husner might sketch the objects directly on his canvas and work later, Mario Blanco prefers to directly paint his object on his canvas, while Pupuk makes his sketch on paper and transfer it to painting afterwards. However, the outcome shows different characters and styles of work.

Paul Husner’s paintings have a very strong character by using strong outlines, brilliant colors and creative composition. On the other hand, Mario Blanco’s still-lives are highlighted by warm overlapping colors without distinct outlines, and in addition, like his father, Mario unites the painting with his frame which is also an artwork by itself. In Pupuk’s works, the artistic brush strokes, form a dominating component. His sensitivity to capture the best angle for his city scenes is remarkable, while the effort to imbue fantasy elements in other subject matters is observable.

I am certain that the art loving community will appreciate and enjoy the works on display and I am even more convinced that these three artists are on their way to make further progress. I look forward to see their works in the future.
