Nowadays, “Globalization” is very popular in all sectors. Some of them are economic globalization, information globalization, and the culture globalization. Indeed, in this information technology globalization era, the West plays a dominant role in changing the world. And, as a member of the global society, we have to adapt the Western culture into our culture. However, I believe it does not mean that we have to forget our own culture in an exchange to the Western culture. Instead, we have to exploit Western culture, and use their influence to enrich our own. In this way, we will have a unique and competitive edge in the global society.

Art as one of the products in culture depends on how we want to see it. The art that build its identity by combining its native side and adding the other cultures will be the one who can go global. As an example, Antonio Carlos Jobin and his friends can translate Brazilian traditional music, Samba, into Jazz, which later on creating the new music genre called ‘Bozanova’.

Another example, we can see how CAI Guo-Qiang can transform the traditional Chinese painting into a contemporary shape and technique by using gun powder as his art media. Also, Heri Dono can bring traditional wayang into global art culture, and get respect from the world market.

I believe, our Indonesian traditional art is the “'d2Ultimate Weapon”'d3 to bring our contemporary art into the world art map.

With this exhibition, Garis Art Space would like to show our commitment in supporting and facilitating the Indonesian contemporary art originating from native art and culture. With this, we ask all the artists, art lovers, to see and to explore our traditional art and culture through the ‘NEW JAVA’ exhibition. Hopefully, we can put this exhibition as Biennale.
